Students from Eastern Mediterranean Underwater Research and Imaging Centre recently released the 50 logger heads Turtles (Caretta caretta) into the ocean.
The director of the research centre, Burak Ali Çiçek, said to the press that they have established a great team of students from all over the world to see the sea turtles and their nests are protected and that they reach the sea unharmed.
Marina Coordinator, Hasan Achbor said that turtles are an important symbol of Cyprus and for tourism. “In this project, we can say that we are successful. But coastal urbanization, vehicles in coastal areas, streetlights and stray animals are big problems,” he noted.
Research leader Cicek added that the relevant government departments need to show greater interest in the issue.
