38th TRNC International Fair

The 38th TRNC International Fair opened on Friday night with a ceremony attended by the acting President and Parliament spokesman Sibel Siber (in white jacket in the picture below) and other government officials.

More than 100 companies are participating in this year’s show at the Atatürk Culture Park which runs until 15 June.

Local and imported products will be sold at the show and there will be social and cultural activities.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economy, Tourism, Culture and Sport Serdar Denktash, stressed the importance of standardization and competitiveness in production.

Denktash announced that his ministry is working on this issue and that an initiative has been launched to switch to alternative energy in Lekosa’s industrial “Lefkoşa Organized Industrial Zone” in an effort to lower operating and production costs.

Denktash said that the work continues to establish a national standards institute, “Cyprus Turkish Standards Institute” that will meet current certification and lab tests, and adapt production to EU standards.

Prime Minister, Özkan Yorgancıoğlu, also spoke and emphasized the importance of the fair to prepare its economy to international competition.

The Prime Minister indicated that the northern Cypriot economy is to compete with the Greek Cypriot economy in the event of a solution: “More work needs to be done to increase the competitiveness of companies and businesses within the TRNC.”

Sibel Siber for his part, expressed the hope that the economy will continue to grow and evolve, “We are close to opening up to the world. The Fair gives us confidence,” she said, after her speech. Sibel Siber then walked with her entourage around the exhibition area to meet with exhibitors.

The fair is open to the public from 19:00 to 00:00 on weekends and 19:00 to 23:00 on weekdays.
