Bicarbonate Part 2: Cleaning

Baking, beauty care and cleaning, there is no end to what you can use Bicarbonate soda for. Furthermore, we avoid harmful and expensive chemical cleaning agents.

Bathrooms:

Pour some baking soda on a damp cleaning sponge and scrub as usual. Rinse well and dry with a dry cloth and voila, it is shiny. If you want it extra clean you can make a cleaning paste with baking soda, coarse salt and tiny bit of detergent/soap. Cover the surfaces to be cleaned and let sit for a while, then scrub a little and rinse.

Hand wash:

Add 2 heaped tablespoons baking soda with your regular detergent to the washing up water in the sink to get a better cleaning of grease and food particles on the plates. If you have pots and pans to be cleaned, let them soak for a while with a little baking soda, dish soap and water. Then use a damp sponge, which you poured some baking soda on, to scrub clean without getting scratches on pans.

Clean dishcloths and sponges:

Soak the dirty washing paraphernalia in 4 tablespoons of baking soda mixed with 250 ml (4.1 l) of warm water and let sit for a while. If they are very dirty then soak them with dish soap and water and give them a spin in the microwave for a minute or two so they become completely clean and smell good again.

Oven cleaner:

Spread baking soda on the bottom of the oven and moisten with water from a spray bottle. Let stand overnight, then rub a little and wipe away all soda. Wipe dry.

The microwave oven:

Have a damp sponge with baking soda and wipe the inside and outside. Clean without having to smell the chemical detergents.

Remove marks on walls and other painted surfaces (including crayons):

Pour baking soda on a damp sponge and scrub lightly, then wipe with a clean dry cloth.

An unpolished tile floor can be shiny and nice again if you have 1/2 cup baking soda in a bucket of warm water and just mop it around. If there are black marks from shoes, just do as you do with the walls and painted surfaces described above.

Plastic shower curtain:

To clean and remove the musty smell from the shower curtain, again use a clean damp sponge with baking soda on, scrub, rinse it off, hang up and let it air dry.

Cleaner wash:

Add half a cup of bicarbonate to the laundry. This makes the clothes cleaner and fresher by providing a better pH balance to the water.

Deodorizer:

In the refrigerator, you can set a small box of baking soda in the back of the cabinet. Bad smells disappear and don’t come back.

Sneakers pour in baking soda and let stand until ready to use again, brush out. No smell left.

Carpets, pet bedding and everything else you need to remove bad odour with baking soda. Sprinkle over and wait as long as necessary, i.e. 15 min / overnight, depending on the degree of odour and size.

Camping all-in-all:

All you need is Bicarbonate of soda: For toothpaste, deodorant, dish soap, pot scrubber, hand cleanser, fire extinguishers and everything else. So don’t forget it on your next camping trip.

Yes, uses for baking soda are endless; it’s probably just our imagination that stops.
