On Friday evening a street party was held in old Delan in Nicosia. Alper Kucuk is the organizer and the street is named Mehmet Kucuk sokak, named after Alpers grandfather who owns the house on the street. There was a garden where the street is today and even earlier, 60 years ago there was a horse farm there. We arrive at 10 o’clock and it’s already packed with people on the small cordoned-off street. Christmas decorations hang between the houses and the atmosphere is perfect.
Graffiti and street-art adorns the walls of the closed stores; if this was somewhere other than Nicosia it would have seemed like thought out design. It feels very natural. The first band to play is Öldüren Sampanya followed by Fikri Karayel, one of North Cyprus’ most popular artists right now. Fikri singing cover songs in both English and Turkish. He does it very well and easily connects with the audience. DJ Tiginn concludes the party that keeps your energy up into the early hours.
Alper Kucuk has held street parties here since 2013 and nowadays there is an event on every month. In the closed stores, he plans to open cafes, wine bar, rock bar and a bunk up a boutique hotel and night club (disco).
