Christmas may be over but the first international temporary exhibition at the AG Leventis Gallery in Nicosia, whose theme is very much attached to the season of giving, is still running.
The exhibition entitled The Nativity Stories concentrates on showing viewers a new approach to the theme of the birth of Jesus. The exhibition does this by firstly displaying a selection of works which trace how the Nativity has been presented throughout recent history and how the history of art itself has shaped the relationship between text and image.
The art on show narrates the story of how the Nativity has been illustrated up until today when we can have a full picture of what has come before and perhaps read art in a different light.
To help the audience receive a complete reading of the subject matter at hand, and to bring the exhibition into modern focus, three photographers, Stelios Kallinikou, Matt Crossick and Guillaume Onimus, were commissioned to approach the representations of the moments after Jesus was brought into the world with a fresh eye.
Each photographer worked independently in London, Nicosia and Paris to photograph famous paintings of the Nativity in churches, museums and other institutions, while also identifying how viewers and the environment they are in communicate with these famous pieces of art.
The exhibition will run until March 2 so if you are in downtown Nicosia and miss all the Christmas lights, or if you want to take in a whole narrative of art, then the Leventis Gallery is sure to do just that.
