A month of theatre is on the agenda for the capital as Lefkoşa Municipality launches its 13th Kibris Theatre Festival from September 1 to 29.
The programme was announced last week at Girne’s Oscar Hotel, who are this year’s main sponsors, with the slogan “Wake Up to Live, Wake Up with Theatre”.
The eight-performance season includes Turkish adaptations of three Western theatre plays.
The Tebdil-i Mekan Theatre will perform Shirley, an adaptation of the Willy Russell comic monologue and 1989 film, Shirley Valentine, this Thursday.
The Sam Bobrick George W Bush satire, Travis Pine: A Man of the People, is the choice of Lefkoşa’s Municipality Theatre who will take to the stage on Monday, September 21.
Istanbul City Theatres promise a Thursday, September 10 performance of 12 Angry Men, a 1954 TV play about a jury by Reginald Rose and, later, a Sidney Lumet film starring Henry Fonda.
Two vintage French plays are also on offer with adapted performances of La Maison d’Argile by Emile Fabre, retitled Rotten Foundations, by Istanbul City Theatres on Tuesday, September 15 and Boris Vian’s The Empire Builders on Thursday September 17.
The season launches at Near East University Atatürk Cultural Centre on Tuesday at 9pm with a performance of the Aziz Nesin play Selamün Kavlen Police Station by Ankara Arts Theatre. A laugh-a-minute performance is promised in this Turkish tale of two crooks who pose as police officers and even open a “police station”.
A performance of On the Lake Shore by the Talimhane Theatre is slated for Tuesday, September 8 and the season will close on Tuesday, September 29 with a Nazim and Brecht Cabaret by the Friends Theatre.
All performances are at 9pm and tickets are available from Avenue Dereboyu shopping mall in Mehmet Akif Caddesi, Lefkoşa, or via www.mybinet.com, are priced at 20TL or 300TL for a season ticket.
