The Apollon October Concerts continue with two concerts by international soloist and chamber musician Mats Lidström on Thursday in Nicosia and Friday in Limassol.
Lidström has gained a reputation for performances of great insight and virtuosity. Born in Stockholm, Sweden and currently living in London, the cellist combines performing with teaching and composing.
Tall and fair with engaging blue eyes, Lidström is involved in a variety of projects, which include performing, arranging, composing and writing books from children’s stories to methodologies on cello technique. Where does he find the time and inspiration? “I think I’m very organised and disciplined, so can achieve a lot during the working day. Sometimes, though, I do wish there were more hours,” says Mats.
Appointed professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1993 (Honorary Associate in 1998), Lidstrom has given master classes at conservatories in San Francisco, Cleveland and Oberlin, as well as in Australia, England, Denmark, Poland, Austria, Spain, South America and Sweden. Prior to the Royal Academy of Music, he taught at the Gothenburg University, Sweden.
As a soloist, he’s performed and recorded with the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsche SO Berlin, Czech Philharmonic and the Dallas Symphony, with conductors such as André Previn, Andrew Litton, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Maxim Shostakovich and Leif Segerstam.
