Cyprus’s contribution to next year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm is already clear. It will be the popular group Minus One, who has had great success both in Cyprus and internationally. The band has in previous years been close to representing the country in the competition, but not until this year has it reached all the way. Members are Francois Micheletto, song, Giorgos Solonos and Konstantinos Amerikanos, guitar and vocals, Chris Ioannidis drums and Antonis Loitzidis on base. The style of music is a mix of pop, rock and modern sound.
Eurovision Song Contest takes place in May next year in Stockholm after Mans Zelmerlöw won with “Heroes” last year. It will be more Sweden for Minus One than traveling to Stockholm. The song will namely be accompanied by one of the Swedish Melodifestivalens kings Thomas G:son. G:son has written many contributions over the years, including the successful “Euphoria” by Loreen in 2012 that went all the way to victory at the Eurovision, “Eternity” by Carola in 2006 and “Listen to Your Heart” with the group Friends of 2001. He has also written music to other countries’ singers, some of which represented their countries in the Eurovision.
Minus One distinguishes itself with its rock music from other contributions Cyprus had in the competition. The members have previously participated in the music competition “Hard Rock Rising” organized by the Hard Rock Café, ending up in eighth place out of 12 000 participants. They have done tours in both Europe and the United States, and perhaps the international fame will lead to a good placement in the Eurovision. Or maybe the songwriter behind “Euphoria” will be enough to get them there.
