Tonight, if you feel like watching a good old drama, then the Embassy of Switzerland will provide you with a chance to do just that, with a screening of the German film Die Schwarzen Bruder (The Black Brothers) at the Cine Studio in south Nicosia.
The 2013 drama, directed by Xavier Koller and starring Fynn Henkel, Moritz Bleibtreu, Oliver Ewy, and Richi Muller, is based on the renowned novel by Lisa Tetzner and Kurt Held.
Up to the middle of the 19th century, poor Alpine farmers in Ticino sold their children as chimney sweeps in Milan. Young Giorgio, the hero of the story, is one of these children. He has to climb up and down dark chimneys, scraping away the soot with his bare hands, but he doesn’t accept this lifestyle as his faith. Together with other children chimney sweeps he forms the community of “Black Brothers.”
The film, like the novel, follows these children’s fight to defend themselves against dismal conditions and attacks by bands of street urchins in Milan.
The screening is part of the Month of German Language. After the screening of the film there will be a cocktail party.
