Youngsters at the American Nursery School received lessons about pet care during a series of activities by the Kyrneia Animal Rescue education team to mark World Animal Welfare Week.
The three- and four-year-olds met three-legged Cyprus terrier Annie – part of the team alongside owner Maggie Smith, and Carole Widdison – who helped them learn in five sessions about the basic needs of pets; getting permission from the owner before approaching someone’s pet; how to behave towards stray animals; and how to stay safe around cats and dogs.
Last Friday saw all of the pupils taking part in the activities receive a certificate and an information pack with tasks during an assembly at the school attended by KAR volunteers Diana and Alan Peek.
KAR was also presented with a donation of pet food from children, parents and teachers, collected at the school during World Animal Welfare Week.
The charity thanked them all for the “fantastic” gift and English Department head Suzan Pastırmacıoğlu for organizing the activities. Headmistress Binnur Saymaz said: “By supporting many social responsibility projects throughout the year, our aim is to raise awareness and sensitivity among children at an early age to adopt such behaviour and make it habit… in the future.
“If educators like us and families can be successful then we will see kind, helpful, people and animal-loving, happy individuals.”
