Lapta Municipality is to hold scaled-down tourism festival this summer, after its 2015 event was cancelled because of financial difficulties. Mayor Fuat Namsoy revealed that his team had this week started planning a four-day festival, pencilled in for June 23.
It will be the village’s eighth tourism festival, following the seventh in 2014.
Mr Namsoy said he was delighted to be making plans to “put Lapta back on the TRNC festivals map” after “a year of economic problems in 2015”.
“Although the festival will be slightly scaled down as we continue recovering we are planning to have various forms of entertainment, concerts by local stars and groups, folk dancing and traditional performances.
“The details are being discussed but my objective is to bring our beautiful village to life with an array of colour and tradition, with dozens of market stalls lining the village square road, having a stage with live music and performers, folk dancing, stalls selling traditional hand crafts Turkish and Turkish Cypriot food and sweets, furniture, and more.
“We are planning to have popular recreational and sports activities, from beach volleyball, football matches and chess tournaments, to off-road and cycling activities.”
Mr Namsoy added that they had started talking to potential sponsors and discussing possible cooperation with Lapta’s “twin” municipalities in Turkey.
