Picnic excursion to Alevkaya

North Cyprus is never far from nature, wherever you are along the island’s north coast, you are surrounded by both sea and mountains. The mountain range that stretches several miles along the sea is called the Five Finger Mountains and from up here you can behold stunning views over the scenic landscape.

There are several roads and paths to choose from for those who want to get up the mountain. There are also plenty of picnic sites with tables and fireplaces if you want to make a barbecue. We packed a picnic basket and went out for a drive to Alevkaya, an area that is located after you turn off the big road by Buffavento Restaurant, above Arapköy.

We stopped to photograph the beautiful view, several times along the way, which only became even more amazing the further up the mountain we came. The picnic place Alevkaya has been there for several years and has probably seen its better days, but it works fine anyway, and it sure is nice to have a proper table when eating! Some well-fed forest cats also came to visit to see what the fire was cooking.

This time of year is perfect for both walks and excursions in Cyprus’ lovely nature. The temperature is pleasant and the rays of sun through the tree tops nicely warm up the face. From March plants like the wild orchid begin to bloom, which attracts many hiking enthusiasts to the island. The Tourist Department has a brochure with maps of North Cyprus’ all trails, called “North Cyprus Trails – Walking in Nature”, and is available at all tourist information offices on the island. If you wish to take part in a guided walk there are several guides, both Swedish and English speakers, who organise such.
