Akincilar saw thousands of visitors flock to the village to join the festivities of the 9th “Once Upon a Time in Louroujina” festival on Sunday.
Amongst the visitors there were hundreds of Greek Cypriots who took the opportunity to visit the village for the first time since the 1974 events.
The new road built recently, and opened to the public on Friday, offered an alternative entrance to the village allowing all visitors free access without the necessity of showing an identity card.
Sunday’s sunny weather also made it easier for people from both sides of the island to visit the village for the festival, with the road leading up to village, seeing its first share of bumper to bumper traffic.
Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci was among the festival goers, and also talked at the opening of the festival.
Akinci said that “Our goal is to create a permanent situation in Cyprus, where everyone can move freely in every corner on the island as free people”.
