Turkish Cypriot negotiator, Kudret Ozersay (shown at right) and the Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis (left) are scheduled to visit South Africa in late April. The visit is the result of the efforts of the United States, reports Turkish newspaper “Milliyet”.
According to the newspaper, it was decided that the two negotiators should be trained in South Africa and get information about how reconciliation has been achieved there.
Negotiators will hear the views and experiences from Roelof Petrus Meyer (shown right), who was a member of the negotiating team in white South Africa, who struggled to reach an agreement. Meyer was appointed minister by the late South African President Nelson Mandela.
Data from a diplomatic source says that the UN might appoint Meyer Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General for Cyprus. Until his retirement from politics in 2000, he played an important and often dominant role in South African politics. He was, among other things Deputy Minister of Law and Order and Constitutional Development (1986-1991) and Defence Minister of Communications and Constitutional Affairs (1991-1996).
