May Day Celebration

Yesterday, on the first of May, was the Bayram here in Northern Cyprus, a holiday where families gather to celebrate outdoors with good food, dancing, singing and socializing.

We visited a great picnic spot, located along the road between Kyrenia and Nicosia (Lefkoşa-Girne Analoyu) before Bogazkoy, and celebrated, together with thousands of people, May 1.

There were barbeques everywhere, cooking everything from lamb, chicken, fish and vegetables, and when we approached different families, or groups, to ask questions about the holiday celebration, we were constantly invited to sit down and eat with them.

People here are very generous and inviting here and like to share what they have.

A band was playing Turkish music, and hundreds of people gathered in front of the stage and danced and laughed. Several market stalls had been set up selling everything from clothing to traditional sweets and ice cream.
