We met Yüksel Akay whose father started the company as early as 1942. His father was a watchmaker that became educated in optics in 1972, and specialised in the two areas. Today Yüksel runs two Akay Optic multibrand stores in Kyrenia and one multibrand store, one Swarovski Boutique and a Swatch store in Nicosia. He also has a multibrand store in Famagusta and one outlet in the shopping mall Erülkü on the highway to Famagusta. His brother has got two shops in Nicosia.
Yüksel also tells us about one of their forthcoming plans, the opening of a new Swarovski Boutique by the end of year 2016, right on the Kyrenia highway. He shows us around in Akay Optic’s largest store, located on the main shopping street of Kyrenia. There are two floors filled with opthalmic frames, sunglasses, watches and other accessories. “Right now, round sunglasses are clearly the hottest model, we see them in all the collections and all the fashion houses. The colour scheme of the frames is preferably in natural colours. Coloured mirrored glasses is a trend that has been further strengthened and completely flat glass is a new and fun detail. Pilot glasses are still in fashion and has become a kind of must for all sunglasses owners,” he says.
We go upstairs where the timeless sunglass brand Ray-Ban is on display. Yuksel explains that the classic models are inherently axiomatic in popularity. New models ar also produced, inspired by the elderly, who are of the highest fashion.
On the lower floor Akay Optic has a wide selection of watches, perfect wristwatches, mechanical clockworks, chronographs and elegant masterpieces. Here you can try on and compare your favourite premium brands like Tissot and Swatch, and trendy watches to wear like jewellery presented by Michael Kors, Guess, Diesel and Calvin Klein. To give the watches a long life there is a certified watchmaker in the shop for service. If a customer prefers to book an appointment for personal counseling, it is possible when it comes to watches, eyewear and sunglasses. “We regularly go to exhibitions around the world, including Milan and Paris, where we place orders for the upcoming season. Everything we import comes directly from the respective fashion houses and are of the highest quality.”
A few years ago, Akay Optic became the official distributor of the glamorous brand Swarovski in North Cyprus, and very recently they started selling the full range of Pandora in their two stores in Kyrenia and Nicosia.
Yüksel mentions that many international customers come to the store. They take the opportunity to shop while they are here on holiday. North Cyprus has cheaper prices on designer sunglasses and watches, as well as jewellery, than other countries, for example it is a full 20% below the price in South Cyprus. This depends on the exchange rate, as North Cyprus has the Turkish Lira.
Recently, it launched its new online store at www.akayoptic.com.tr, so now it is perfectly possible to order watches, glasses and accessories over the internet. Delivery is next day. The page will soon be coming in English.
