Turkish Cypriot President Mustafa Akinci is part of a list of 27 other candidates nominated by Politico Europe for people likely to shape 2017 and beyond.
Politico Europe is a Brussels-based European affairs weekly newspaper which founded Politico 28 – an annual list which debuted last year with selectees from EU countries. The candidates are chosen more as a symbolic rather than a literal figure.
Akinci is in the list which also includes Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, London Mayor Sadiq Khan and High Representative of Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the Vice-President of the Commission, Federica Mogherini.
Akinci, who is holding meetings in Brussels this week, met with Federica Mogherini on Tuesday and later the President of the European Parliament Martin Schultz. He is expected to meet President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday.
Speaking to the Anatolian News Agency on Tuesday evening, Akinci said that he discussed the on–going Cyprus peace talks process in his meetings and touched on the talks to be held in Geneva.
Akinci indicated that the Geneva meetings were scheduled to last three days which would then be followed up by the multi-party conference with the guarantor powers of Turkey, Greece and Britain.
He said the Turkish Cypriots wanted a settlement which would not only protect their rights but that of the other community as well.
