Feminist art comes to Lefkosa´s Capital Arts Centre this month as the European Mediterranean Arts Association (Emaa) launches seminars by Turkish artist Canan.
Born in Istanbul in 1970, Canan graduated first in Business Administration and later in Painting and Fine Arts from Marmara University before winning the Yunus Emre special award.
She has completed residencies at German art schools and in the US at Boston´s School of the Museum of Fine Arts.
Two, three-hour evening seminars, which are free of charge and open to all, are slated for 6-9pm on Thursday and Friday, February 26 and 27, at the Capital Arts Centre behind Lefkosa´s main Deniz Plaza bookshop.
Project co-ordinator Özgül Ezgin said: “Turkey´s first feminist organisation, Women´s World, was founded in 1984 as a publishing house and became a network for women and feminist politics. By 1990, it reached the art world and women artists.” She added that feminism, seen in Turkey as a Western concept, had nevertheless begun to thrive through modern art where it questioned taboos and double standards.
The two-day programme is part of an EU-funded, bicommunal civil society project partnered by Emaa and the Rooftop Theatre Group.
