Ayhan Avcı is a highly sought after carpenter with an eye for detail and a passion for construction. He has in recent years helped many homeowners with renovation projects. Born in Cyprus, he began working for a British construction company in 2003 before he started his own in 2006. At first, he had one employee, but as the years went by and the word of his talent spread on the island, he has been able to expand, and currently has seven people working for him in the company Isay Construction. Nevertheless Ayhan emphasises the importance of keeping the company moderately big, as it is characterised by its personalised service, and therefore never chooses to work with more than a few customers at a time, all for the best results and customer satisfaction.
Isay Construction performs everything from simple renovations to building of entire houses. The company helps customers wanting to buy a villa to seek out a suitable plot of land and then designs the house to the customer’s wishes. Ayhan has many contacts with landowners and the company has a designer and architect. Ayhan is known in Cyprus for his flair and perfection, and for delivering products at a good price. He is also very well-liked as a person as he always has a smile on his face and laughs easily.
To show us an example of the company’s work Ayhan takes us to a renovation project it has worked on for three years. It is a family house beautifully situated on the wooded hillside belonging to the romantic village of Karmi above Kyrenia. The owners of the house have fallen so much in love with Ayhan’s craftsmanship and unique style that they have opted to give him a free hand. We walk up a stone staircase that Ayhan’s built and come to a beautiful forged gate that leads us to a narrow courtyard between two white house walls adorned with clinging bougainvilleas. Fallen leaves and almonds from the almond trees decorate the cobbled path that takes us up to the main building. The house, which consists of three separate buildings, is designed in a classic Mediterranean style with an interior which has preserved the authentic elements typical of Cyprus, such as the polished stone arches.
Ayhan tells how he has renovated the kitchen and bedrooms, added new floors, replaced windows and moved doors. The floor inside the guest room is treated with a mixture containing olive oil which has evoked dreamy patterns in the mat floor. In the kitchen which is in a separate building the benches are made of fine olive trees. In the yard a formerly large rock has been dug out and split into smaller pieces to use as material for a beautiful stone wall. He points to the wall where a few green leaves protrude between the stones and says smilingly how he planted some seeds there during construction. It’s obvious that this is a renovation project close to Ayhan’s heart, and as he shows us around, he talks about several ideas he has planned for the house. One of the dreams is to be able to expand with a swimming pool.
