Büyükkonuk´s Donkey Day

A rural treat for all the family is on offer today at the Karpaz eco-village of Büyükkonuk´s Donkey Day.

Villagers will showcase cuddly rabbits, lambs and goats, chickens, ducks and turkeys alongside donkey and horse rides.

Organiser Lois Cemal said: “This will be our forth Donkey Day and children will be able to pet rabbits, bottle feed a lamb or hear a rooster crow. Farm animals, traditional food and crafts, local eggs, vegetables and olive oil will all be on sale.”

She added: “Or just come along for a kebab or coffee and cake and enjoy a dance show by Lefkoşa street kids who we are bussing in for the day to see the countryside.”

The Studio 21 dance group for the capital´s street children, which will perform, was founded by dance instructor Derviş G Zeybek.

Mrs Cemal founded the Donkey Day project with her husband İsmael in 2010 when they took eight young Turkish Cypriots on an EU-funded trip to visit donkey projects in the UK and Portugal and visited English agricultural shows. Mrs Cemal also completed a donkey care guide book in Turkish and English to encourage local people to find a new eco-tourism role for the redundant Cypriot donkey.

The event runs from 11am-4pm at the Büyükkonuk Eco-tourism Association garden.
