A masterpiece of children’s literature will be commemorated on its 150th anniversary with a world premiere of films and a live musical performance at South Nicosia’s Shoe Factory on Thursday, November 26.
The Wonderland Project features short pieces by 13 international composers inspired by the chapters of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, to be performed by two leading British musicians: virtuoso violinist Matthew Trusler and pianist and professor of piano at the Royal College of Music Ashley Wass.
Mr Wass, a regular guest at the BBC Proms, is also the artistic director of the Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival and has performed at Wigmore and Carnegie halls, the Vienna Konserthaus and a gala Golden Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace.
Mr Trusler, who will use a bow, once owned by renowned concert violinist Daniel Heifetz, is renowned for his performances of 20th century works and has been invited to perform throughout Europe, Australia, the US, Japan and South Africa.
Films illustrating each chapter by 13 solo filmmakers or teams of animators were selected from 127 applications after a worldwide call for works by the South Nicosia Pharos Arts Foundation and International Motion Festival Cyprus and will be screened simultaneously.
All profits will be donated to the UK-based Lenny Trusler Children’s Foundation, which is dedicated to helping seriously ill newborns and infants in the UK and abroad.
The foundation was founded by Mr Trusler and violinist Maya Koch after the loss of their baby son to a rare kidney disease in 2007.
The work will also be released on CD and DVD in March on the Orchid Classics label which was founded by Mr Trusler in 2005.
