If you haven’t yet tried this spicy bulgur mixture, often served wrapped in flatbread with tomato, onion, parsley and pomegranate sauce, you have really missed out! It is a real favourite amongst Turkish Cypriots who happily eat it for lunch or as an afternoon snack. Çiğ Köfte is completely vegan and therefore really healthy!
Çiğ Köfte is sold in specialty stores as well as in small street stalls. One of the largest Çiğ Köfte chains is called Komagene and comes from Turkey. Today there are over a thousand restaurants in the world, including in Austria, Holland, France and Germany, six of them are in North Cyprus. The name Komagene actually comes from the city in Turkey where the Çiğ Köfte was born.
Komagene restaurants have lifted up the traditional Çiğ Köfte to a new level by modernising it with several choices of vegetables, such as carrots, cucumber, cabbage, corn and olives. You can even choose Komagene’s own dressing or hot sauce !
Komagene serves two kinds of Çiğ Köfte rolls, Dürum (7 TL) and Mega Dürum (10 TL). You can also buy the bulgur mixture, vegetables and flatbread separately if you wish to make your own rolls.
