Cyprus has been listed in the New York Times as one of the places to visit in 2017, with the tagline “A cultural and culinary renewal on a Mediterranean island”.
The influential New York periodical makes special mention of Paphos for its role as 2017 European Capital of Culture, but says the entire island is worth a visit, and especially Nicosia.
In Nicosia, the New York Times recommends a visit to the A.G. Leventis Gallery for its collection of 800 artworks, a stay at the Altius Boutique Hotel, and food and drink at trendy hot spots like Cook Shop, To Elliniko Ouzomezedopoleio and the Pivo Microbrewery.
It is an honourable mention for the island, which has seen the number of passengers passing through its Larnaca and Paphos airports in 2016 rising by 1.3 million compared to 2015, according to a press release by Hermes Airports.
More specifically, a total of 8,974,163 passengers travelled through the airports in 2016, 1,365,000 more than in 2015, recording an 18% increase. There was a 24.5% rise at Larnaka airport and 2.6% at Pafos airport. According to Hermes Airports’ data, the most important hikes were recorded by the markets of Russia (+47%), the United Kingdom (+13%), Greece (+14.5%) and Israel (+47%).
