Cyprus, and its song ‘Gravity’ performed by Hovig, was one of ten countries to make it through to the Eurovision Song Contest final in Kiev on Tuesday night.
Cyprus’ entry Gravity is written by a former Eurovision winner. Thomas G:son co-wrote Loreen’s Euphoria that won for Sweden in 2012; he’s won the Swedish final as a songwriter several times and written entries for several other countries.
Hovig, 28, was born in Nicosia and first rose to prominence on the music scene after taking seventh place in Greece’s X Factor in 2009.
The countries to qualify were Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the Ukraine.
It was heartbreak for Finland, Czech Republic, Latvia, Albania, Georgia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Iceland, whose suitcases arrived just in time to head home.
