Forestry Authority in North Cyprus

One of the most precious things we have here in our northern part of the island is forests. Thanks to the mountains, we have a nice green forest full of mixed tree species. Amid the pines you can find feral olive trees, cypress and carob trees. And sometimes fruit trees pops up too.

Around the earth there are about 20,000 different orchid varieties, throughout Cyprus there are a total of 45 different varieties, 30 of which are here in the north. All varieties are protected and it is prohibited to pick them or dig them up. Heavy fines are handed out to those who disobey the rules.

In addition, there is an abundant fauna of herbs, including wild sage, thyme, marjoram, many more varieties.

Northern Cyprus forest works controls the entire forest and its vegetation, they are responsible for all the planting of new trees, species preservation, fire hazards and make sure that people behave in nature and do not vandalise trees and plants.

You are not allowed to remove trees in anyway here, for anyone who lives near the forest you need to apply for permission from the forest works even if the tree is on one’s own plot. If you live in a village or along the coast, you need to apply to the municipality.

The unique nature here is vulnerable and the worst thing that could happen to it is wildfire. Fire in the forest is hard to overcome here when the terrain is often difficult to access. It is strictly forbidden to make fire/barbeque in the forest. During the hot periods of the year when it does not rain for months, it is especially sensitive. A cigarette butt, a piece of glass or the embers of a fire/grill can cause tremendous devastation.

The forestry department has a great responsibility to fulfil. They build fire roads and observation towers everywhere, including along the coast, facing the mountains. If there is the slightest sign of smoke, alarm bells ring, and it’s full steam ahead to the affected area.

They are dependent on everyone to help keep watch and report suspicious fires, illegal logging and other abuse of nature. We all need to do our bit to preserve our unique natural surroundings, so do not be afraid to report, it benefits everyone.
