Friends of the Earth Cyprus is acting for environment

In December, the need for major actionnorth-cyprus-Friends-of-the-Earth-Cyprus will be taken when the most important UN climate change conference to date takes place in Paris. Catching the interest last Sunday in Nicosia was Friends of the Earth Cyprus. The organization is part of the Friends of the Earth International, which has spread to seventy countries on all continents and is one of the largest NGOs in the world. Friends of the Earth Cyprus writes on their website that their goal is to draw attention to the need to preserve the natural environment and to campaign against social and environmental issues, which were part of the event on Sunday where they symbolically buried fossil fuels in the ground with the slogan “oil must be kept in the soil”.

They turned to both the Government of Cyprus and Europe, urging them to work harder to produce clean energy. “Europe has the opportunity and responsibility to do more to speed up the transition to clean energy sources and increase their efforts to tackle climate change, for the climate and humanity’s sake,” said a statement.

Paris COP 21 is the twenty first climate conference that the United Nations is hosting and will be one of the largest meetings on climate ever – and the most important. For the first time one will develop a universal binding law on how to control the side effects of climate change and keep the temperature rise under the important 2 degrees. A major issue at these meetings is even the breakdown of costs, since many developing countries still need to put their money to raising their living standards to the level of developed countries.
