Kyrenia has a long narrow mountain range that consists of a series of rock formations that runs in an east-west direction with a sedimentary origin, with an altitude of 1024 meters at the top of Selvili Tepe, or Kyparissovouno.
The geological formation of the mountains is from Perm and early Triassic periods (250 to 300,000,000 years ago). Among the sedimentary rocks, there are several rare volcanic lava formations and metamorphic rock outcrops (multi-coloured chlorite, quartz mica- and hornblende-schist’s and quartzite’s).
The mountain range also consists of limestone and has many caves and rocky habitats of great value to wildlife.
