For a brief period in the 1300s, Famagusta was the richest city in the world. Although much of it now lies abandoned, but the impressive Venetian walls still remain. Echoes of faded grandeur remain in the redeveloped city centre and the ornate Gothic Cathedral of St. Nicholas (now a mosque) brushes the sky.
Pockets of decadence remain, like Petek pastry and coffee shop, the home of all sticky and sweet treats. Snuggle up next to the stone fireplace and admire the collection of colourful Arabian plates and costumes that adorn the walls, while you taste the various pistachio and honey-laden pastries. Rows of Turkish delight in blazing colours of green, orange, pink, frosted with icing sugar and coconut. A family of cakes shaped like ladybirds, delicacies made of carrot and nougat … goodies that attract the sweetest tooth, and the hot chocolate is divine!
