Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots joined together on Monday to play a friendly game of football against an international team, mostly made up of UN personnel, ‘Cyprus Mail’ reports.
The game was organised by the British High Commission in Nicosia to mark a friendly football match that was played during a spontaneous ceasefire on Christmas Day in 1914, in World War 1.
Monday’s football match took place in the buffer zone near Ledra Palace checkpoint and the international team won by 5 – 2.
“On Christmas Day 1914 there was a spontaneous ceasefire on the Western Front. When the guns fell silent, soldiers emerged from their trenches, they buried their dead, they sang carols in their own language and they exchanged gifts.
Along the front line, men from both sides came together.
Some of them even played football.
