Hairdressers get first aid training

Funky Divaz owner Naciye Özbada and two hair stylists took time out for one-day first aid course with Civil Emergency Service Volunteer (CESV) trainers at their Karakum salon.

Mrs Ozbada said: “I hope we never need to use it, but we all feel much more confident now and we learnt a lot. Now I want to organise a session for teenagers including my own three who are very keen. I think all teenagers should do the course and spread the word. I want to keep my family, my clients and my staff safe. Our shop is on a busy road and it’s good to know that you could help in an emergency.”

CESV trainer Claire Lamb said: “It was a fantastic day and they didn’t even want to break for lunch. They are the first private business to request our help and we hope that many more will follow suit. We did CPR and how to check accident victims for broken bones. Naciye has quite a few diabetic clients and elderly parents so we practised identifying a diabetic emergency as well as stroke, heart attack, chemical burns, asthma and allergy attacks and choking.”

Wounds were also included in a realistic and relevant scissor accident mock-up.

“We all feel that we would not panic in an emergency now because we have seen and dealt with it real,” Mrs Özbada added.

“Things I didn’t know included putting the head forward for a nosebleed and not to take the scissors out of the wound. Now I want to do the three-day course and pass the Association of First Aiders exams to be a UK- and EU-accredited first aider.”

Businesses, groups or schools who would like to arrange a first aid training session are invited to phone Claire Lamb on 0542 878 7111.
