Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and lasts until Christmas Eve. The four Sundays leading up to Christmas are called first, second, third and fourth Sunday of Advent. When Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, the Advent lasts longer than if Christmas Day falls on a Monday. The time until Christmas Eve counts down in different ways depending on tradition. In the northern hemisphere it is the darkest time of the year where many homes accommodate an Advent candle holder with four candlelights. A candle is lit for each Sunday in Advent that has passed.
