Wonder Woman, Kylo Ren and a Spartan warrior were among the superheroes and villains to descend on the TRNC on Sunday for the country’s first ever “Geek Fest”.
Organisers said around 1,000 adults and children turned up throughout the day for the convention at the Kings Bowling Leisure Centre in Kyrenia, where enthusiasts dressed up as their favourite comic book and film characters.
Iron man was said to be the star of the show, with children left “awestruck” by his lifelike features. Arcade game and ten pin bowling lovers had the chance to compete in special tournaments, while a tombola raised just over 2,000TL for the Help Those With Cancer Association (Tulips).
More than 50 stalls, including around 30 belonging to the event sponsors, sold food, drinks and merchandise, while children enjoyed having henna tattoos of Japanese anime characters.
Delighted Cyprus Geek Team founder Ali Soytürk said he had received “positive feed-back” from the participants and planned to re-run the festival next year. “We had attendance from foreigners to families, whose children were in awe of the characters who came along in their costumes,” he said.
“It was a tiring process to organise the whole event, but we gained a lot in return as all went according to plan. We will definitely take the event further by organising more ‘side’ events until we hold another festival next year.”
Tulips representatives thanked organisers for allowing them to raise money at the event and said they had received “tremendous” support from individuals and companies alike.
