The Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) and Nissi Beach Resort held a beach clean-up day to mark World Environment Day and to celebrate the ongoing ‘green’ status of the beach.
The clean-up is an annual event that has been organised by the management of the 4-star Nissi Beach Resort for the past 15 years. During the clean-up, over 100 volunteers from Nissi Beach Resort, CSTI, Thomas Cook UK, Ayia Napa elementary school (third grade) and staff from neighbouring Nissi Park, Atlantica Aeneas Resort & Spa and Olympic Lagoon Resort hotels combined forces to collect debris from the sand, whilst Padi-Lucky Divers cleaned the bottom of the seabed.
The volunteers collected a total of 15kg of general waste and 5kg of plastic, which came from both the beach and the seabed.
Whilst the clean-up took place from 9.15 – 11am, the event also offered the ideal opportunity to raise this season’s Blue Flag after the clearing had been completed.
The global eco-label is awarded to beaches and marinas in nearly 50 countries that have met strict criteria, including water quality, safety standards and the provision of services and general environmental management. It is an accolade that confirms the quality of Nissi Beach and its waters.
