October 1 – Independence Day

Every year on 1st October Cyprus celebrates Independence Day. This day honours Cypriots day in 1960 when Cyprus became independent from the British after a long and bitter struggle that lasted from 1955 to 1959, October 1st is a holiday, which this year falls on a Wednesday. Schools, offices and many shops are closed on this day.

Independence Day is celebrated with festivals in schools and communities, parades, celebrations and processions. The main event of the day is a large military parade, which takes place in the centre of the capital. The day will conclude with an open reception at the presidential palace.
