Photos highlight environment

Photographs themed on the environment went on show at the capital’s Atatürk Cultural Centre on Monday in the first Aksa Energy Photofest Competition.

Aksa Kalecik power station general manager Murat Çaptuğ said that the contest would be repeated annually: “We chose this theme to raise public awareness of environmental
problems but included the Cyprus seasons to show off the beauty of the island.”

Around 45 of 150 submissions from 22 photographers were selected for the show which will soon go on tour in major towns.

First prize of 3,000TL went to Tevfik Ulual for his sunset portrait Battle for the Environment.

Runners-up Ramadan Gümüşok and Korman Kocaismail scooped cash prizes of 2,000 TL and 1,000TL for World of Men, a portrait of a stranded turtle carcass and I am not Rubbish, a portrait of a discarded bicycle.

The Aksa special award of a week’s holiday in Antalya went to Ebru Derviş for her picture of
a whirlwind at sea.

Special prizes of 500TL each were awarded to Gülnur Tokay for a snap of a polluted stream,
Hüseyin Çekirdek for a photo of a stone quarry and to Mehmet Gökyiğit for his shot entitled Springtime Cyprus.
