This coming Wednesday and Thursday (times are shown below) artist George Kepola will give a presentation on the creative process and techniques used to create mosaics in memory of his younger brother Alkis Kepola, who was also an artist.
The presentation on Wednesday is suitable for adults and will take place in Kepola’s hometown of Athienou. Kepola, who studied painting at the New York Academy of Fine Arts, invites anyone who is interested in the art form to come along and bring a mosaic projects they are currently working on so that it may be discussed and any questions asked. Some of the artist’s work will also be on display and one of his unfinished works will be available for participants to practise on.
On Thursday Kepola will give a presentation to school students showing them how to cut the stones and stick and piece them together.
Kepola founded the Kepola Brothers Byzantine Iconography and Mosaic Workshop together with his brother in 1984 and has been giving lessons since then. He has also produced a number of icons for churches around Cyprus and abroad, such as Saint Raphael in Sotira. Apart from painting icons and producing mosaics, Kepola has also illustrated five books.
The brothers have also exhibited their work in Cyprus, Melbourne, Vienna and New York.
