President Mustafa Akıncı presented a plaque to eight-year-old Turkish Cypriot musician Suna Alsancak last Monday, after she scooped first prize in the piano solo category of an international music festival and competition in Spain’s Canary Islands.
Suna Alsancak competed in the under nine age group, winning over judges from Russia, Germany and the US with her musical prowess at the Stars of Tenerife event.
During the competition little Suna, a year three student at Near East Primary School in Lefkoşa, had the opportunity to take part in “master classes” with Professor Tamara Poddubnaya, director of music at New York’s Long Island Conservatory of Music and Natalia Kazimirovskaia from Sweden, chair of the festival’s organising committee. President Akinci and first lady Meral congratulated the young talent on her seventh international award and wished her continued success.
Her pianist tutor Rauf Kasimov, also took part in the contest, which ended on November 3, coming second in the “no age limit” category as well as a prize for the “best interpreter”.
