Engraver Evgenia Vasiloude will present her latest collection under the name Printed Conversations as of Friday at the Centre of Contemporary Art Diatopos in south Nicosia.
In this solo collection, Vasiloude uses printing techniques and embroidery to bring to life a natural landscape where grey skies and bare branches become pieces of art that may engage in conversations with the viewer.
Thematically and conceptually, her work originally focused on the female figure, embodied with references to mythology, especially the goddess of nature and of fertility. This latest exhibition not only deals with images of the natural world and the environment, but it also concentrates on women’s identity.
Vasiloude studied at the State School of Fine Arts in Kiev, Ukraine between 1981 and 1988. She graduated with a Master in Fine Arts degree. During this time she studied drawing, painting and engraving techniques – woodcut, linocut, lithography and etching. At the same time, she studied illustration, graphic design, calligraphy and history of art in the Engraving and Graphic Arts Department.
Since 1992 she has shown her work in four solo shows and has also participated in group exhibitions in Cyprus. She has also taken part in biennials and other engraving exhibitions abroad, including Slovenia, Croatia, Greece, Switzerland, England, France, Russia, Spain and Sweden.
Her work, Hymn to Demeter, won the second jury prize at the ninth Cairo International Biennial, in 2003.
Recently she took part in the group presentation of Cypriot engravers called the Nicosia-Portland Project, in Oregon, USA.
Her work can be found in the State Collection of Contemporary Cypriot Art and in bank collections, as well as in private ones.
She currently teaches fine and graphic art in public schools.
