There are 10 different species of snakes, 3 different turtles, three different amphibians, seven lizard species and one type of chameleon existing in Northern Cyprus. Of these, the Spiny lizard (Laudakia stellio) which can grow to 35 cm in length is the largest and most often visible here.
The lizard is common and is often found on stone walls, rocky fields, olive groves and scrubland, and it can easily climb both trees and stones and can be found almost anywhere in Cyprus.
It eats mostly insects, but occasionally some plants. This lizard can often be seen sunning themselves with their characteristic head bobbing up and down.
