Lower land areas may enjoy the rare treat of snow on Monday while mountain roads and some schools in the higher regions had by early morning already been closed due to heavy snowfall.
An Education Ministry representative told state radio the problem was concentrated in the Nicosia district. “Specifically, the state primary schools in Kyperounta, Agros, and Pelendri as well as Trimiklini state kindergarten were closed because they were inaccessible for most pupils and teachers. The state nursery school and primary school in Kambos was also closed because although its pupils could reach the building, their teachers, coming in from outside the community, could not.”
In middle and high school, the schools at Lemythou and Agros were closed while some pupils at other mountain area schools, such as Omodos, were unable to get to class because their home villages were snowed in. Farmakas school was due to open soon after 9am once roads were cleared, the representative said.
According to the Meteorological Services forecast, low pressure in the Eastern Mediterranean is expected to bring snow in the mountains and hilly areas and sleet or at least snow elsewhere.
Temperatures will reach 7 °C inland, 10 °C on the coasts and -3 °C in the mountains. By Monday night, temperatures are expected to drop to 9 °C inland, 2 °C on the coasts and -9 °C in the mountains.
Tuesday will start out fine before becoming partly cloudy with the chance of more snow in the mountains and kills. The temperature is expected to rise slightly.
Wednesday and Thursday will be mainly fine with little change in the temperature on Wednesday but Thursday becoming slightly warmer.
