Swimmers in Limassol and Paphos celebrated New Year’s Day with a dip in the sea and a party by the beach.

Despite low temperatures, the bathers enjoyed their swim and invited everyone to take up winter swimming as it is good for the health.

“We have a warm heart and this is all we need,” Limassol swimmer Varnavas Hadjittofis told Antenna TV. He added that their driving force was their love of the sea and their friendship. “We are family. We are here round the year and we invite people to join us.”

In Limassol, swimmers had a barbecue beach party with music after their swim. The event was attended by the new Limassol mayor Nicos Nicolaides.

In Paphos, winter swimmers swam around a floating Christmas tree at the municipal baths beach, while their friends and family joined them in a party that included food, drinks and dancing.

The head of the Vrysouthkia Kelpetri winter swimmers, Matheos Ieorokipiotis, said the group would continue its social contribution to Paphos society.
