Talk about the local weather!

We all know that on an island, the weather can change in minutes. The weather here is really localised; bright sunshine in one place and pouring with rain a few feet away. I have had the experience when I’ve stood in one spot which is dry and sunny and have then taken a step and ended up in the pouring rain, then stepped back again into the dry sunshine.

It has been said by meteorologists that it would rain this weekend but we usually tend to look at the sky to assess the weather. Yesterday it was nice out; it was a bit cloudy in Girne but no “threatening” clouds. When I got home it was completely cloudless and sunny. I sat at the computer and 2 min later, I heard a dull rumble, I looked out and to my amazement saw that the sky was pitch black. It started to flash and the rumble fiercely and suddenly the storm winds rapidly picked up their pace. Quick as a flash I covered everything that was outside, got the dogs in and rushed to the window. I love watching a real thunderstorm.

So began the heavy rain that then turned into a hailstorm of unprecedented strength. It poured down like large marble hail stones together with giant raindrops. It was an impressive sight, which lasted just over an hour and then the sun came out.

I heard that there was flooding in many places in Lefkosa and also here in the village, up at the outpatient station, located high in the mountains, it was all white. People went and photographed the phenomenon. Snow and ice is very rare here. Sometimes in winter you can see some white on the top of the mountain range, but it rarely lasts.

Only a few miles from us they only had just a few minutes gently rain. I can honestly say that many are jealous of us here because we get more rain than they get in the West, i.e. in the Lapta direction. We have the greenest vegetation of all which is something to be happy about.

The dogs were amazed by these white, cold and wet mounds that lay everywhere. They were blissfully sniffing and tasting the hail, for they have never seen snow or ice before. I have tried to capture the size of the hail, so that you can see it for yourself.

Today we have 26 degrees and sunshine.
