Two sisters will this weekend be the first Turkish Cypriots to perform at the No-Body Dance/Movement and Performance Arts Festival in South Nicosia.
The participation of Toya and Sevim Akpinar, both choreographers and dancers, in the seventh running of the event is described as “very important not only for the festival, but generally for performing arts, especially contemporary dance in Cyprus”.
Organisers said the involvement of Girne American University teacher Sevim Akpinar – who succeeded in bringing acclaimed Portuguese contemporary artist Mafalda Deville over to dance and lead a three-hour workshop – “added to the contemporary and innovative spirit of the festival”.
The bicommunal nature of the event was also said to be a boon to cross-border communication, cooperation and the exchange of ideas and experiences among artists, providing a “basis for coexistence for a common creative artistic future in Cyprus”.
The festival features dance performances which started yesterday and continue tonight – at a cost of six to eight euros, from 7.30pm at the Dancehouse venue – and the Mafalda Deville workshop from 10am on Monday, costing 15 to 20 euros.
