TRNC to host tourism event

The TRNC is preparing to host a major meeting next year of tourism officials from around the globe.

Details of the North Cyprus executive board meeting of the United Federal Travel Agents Association (Uftaa) are being worked on by the Cyprus Turkish Travel Agents Union (Kitsab) and the government this week.

Plans for the event follow a gathering of some 70 heads of Uftaa member organisations on the Indonesian island of Bali, between November 13 and 19, at which the problems of travel agents were discussed.

Kitsab joined Uftaa five years ago, prompting Greek Cypriots to resign from it in protest, an official said.

Kitsab administrative committee member Özbek Dedekorkut, who also went to the congress in Indonesia, told Cyprus Today: “The congress… went very well and we were able to talk with officials of other countries, among them Belgium, Italy, Chile, Bulgaria, India, Turkey and many more.

“We are now planning to host the TRNC’s first international tourism-based event.”

The North Cyprus session will take place from February 19 to 22.

Kitsab honorary chairman Ahmet Necati Özkan said the Indonesian meeting constituted a “first step” towards having the Uftaa general assembly and congress in North Cyprus next year.
