For those who love fishing the sea off North Cyprus‘ coast is like a dream come true. In the marine ecosystem off the coast of Cyprus live a large number of fish species. North Cyprus Fishing takes guests who want to go fishing out on the boat Bewitched every day. We met Dennis Davutogullari and his daughter Janel whom together organise tours.
Dennis was born in Australia, and grew up fishing in the Tasman Sea off the coast of Melbourne. His Turkish Cypriot parents took him with, at the age of eighteen, on holiday to Cyprus, and since then he lives here. “It was a long holiday,” Dennis says with a laugh. Fishing is in the blood (even his name Dennis means sea in Turkish!), and he has now devoted himself to this professionally for 32 years.
The boat Bewitched is specially adapted to Mediterranean conditions and fully equipped with advanced fishing techniques. Among the fishing boats that set out from Kyrenia’s harbour it is one of the most advanced and the only one that reaches out to all fishing areas around the coast. It uses a so-called “Fish Finder” to find the fish. A deep drop electrical fishing reel is used to bring up the largest fish. It has pen reels with 50, 80 and 130 lb.
“We need advanced equipment as the fish we encounter can be real giants,” says Dennis, and mentions some types of fish. Off the coast of Cyprus the most common are Albacor Tuna of approximately 10 kg, swordfish weighing 35 kg and grouper at around 25 kg. But it also happens that they encounter Bluefin Tuna of 200 kg upward! Sharks are also plentiful, but they tend to stay very far out in the sea and never come near the coast.
A fishing trip with North Cyprus Fishing takes 4-5 hours and they usually go out in the morning or the early afternoon. It is a fun and exciting activity that suits everyone. Tourists from countries like USA, Australia, England, Germany, Sweden and Norway usually love to go out on the Mediterranean and try their luck!
