A video club that has served the foreign community for nearly 20 years will close this week and sell their collection of 4,000 videos and DVDs.
Every Wednesday in St. Andrew’s Church Hall, in Girne, the club offered a variety of movies and British TV shows for sale or rent, which raised nearly £30,000 for the church fund.
The club was set up by a group of people, but the operation was taken over by John Dyer when he moved to the island, from Bournemouth, 15 years ago. Donations of unwanted DVD’s and Videos came from visitors from the UK, and he copied the movies to DVD’s.
The club also offered a chance for foreigners in northern Cyprus to meet and socialize. “It’s a shame to see it close down after all these years,” said Mr. Dyer who lives in Dogankoy.
“It has increased exponentially! When I started there were only three places that sold movies. It was very good up until about four years ago, when more and more DVD stores opened and better TVs shows were available, said 75-year-old.
Videos and DVDs will be sold for 2TL each and some have already been purchased in bulk for schools. The sale will take place on Wednesday from 10:00 am until noon, and refreshments will be available.
