Welcoming the spring festivals

A variety of festivals are in store for spring. St George’s Day was celebrated yesterday in the Maronite village Korucam, and began with a religious ceremony at St George’s Church, conducted by the Archbishop of Cyprus Youssef What Soueif at 09:00.

The village will also host the St George’s Festival on Saturday, starting with a sightseeing tour from 11:00 and repeated every hour until 16:00.  There will be afternoon prayers in the church at 17:00, followed by a Fiesta (Kelpasti) at 20:00, with traditional songs, chops, kebabs and wine in the square.

On Sunday the archbishop will lead holy mass at 08:00 till 09:30 in the church. Other activities include a women’s bazaar in the town square 09:00 till 4:00 p.m., a running contest from 10:00, and a painting workshop for kids from 11:00 till 14:00 at the cemetery.

More traditional sounds and flavours are offered on the fourth Akıncılar Festival on Sunday May 4, with stalls, a concert by Arda Gündüz, dance, and food in the centre of the village near Ercan airport. It starts at 10:00 and those wishing to attend are asked to bring their ID card or passport. On the same day Büjükkonuk village hosts its 14th Traditional Eco Day from 10:00 am with day-long activities for children and adults 11:30 till 18:00.

The ninth Cyprus Silk Festival in Bellapais runs from Friday May 2 to Sunday 4 May and the full program will be released soon.

Also there is the third Bağlıköy Eco Day on Sunday 11 May organized by Bagliköy eco-volunteer club. Activities include hiking, biking, live music and a visit to a bat cave.
